LGBTQ+ Counselling & Therapy
Issues relating to gender, sexuality, and relationship diversity are areas of interest to me and feature prominently in my clinical work. As a gay man, I have a particular appreciation of the unique benefits and challenges people with identities of difference and diversity face in their lives. Thinking together about cultural, social, and intersectional impacts on our sense of self, relationships and community are topics commonly explored in my office.
A significant part of my practice involves working with clients who consider themselves as having non-traditional identities, relationships, and sexualities (e.g., polyamory, kink). My commitment is that we will work together to help you make greater sense of your life and improve how you feel.
Many LGBTQ+ individuals have different and sometimes difficult developmental experiences growing up. These formative experiences shape us in specific and unique ways.
My approach
With a warm and empathic approach, I enjoy collaborating with my clients to overcome fears, improve relationships, and address emotional roadblocks that hold them back. Together, with patience and curiosity, we can come to a new understanding of your past and present and find ways to live more fully into the future. I am committed to making the therapy room a space to talk about all aspects of the gay and queer experience and I work with my clients to unravel the many ways their identity may have impacted their lives:
Issues with gender identity
Gender variance
Resolving historical feelings of inadequacy or shame
Sexuality
Community issues
Difficulties in relationships
Family rejection
Depression and anxiety
Emotional exhaustion
Social pressures
Substance use
Concern about sexual behaviour
HIV
And many others
Kink issues
I have a particular interest in working with LGBTQ+ people in relationships and devote a large amount of my clinical work to those in different types of contemporary relationships and I am kink positive in my practice.
